About Lamplight Library

Lamplight Library brings beloved children’s books back into the light — narrated, illustrated, and read aloud one chapter at a time. Our first is The Blue Cat of Castle Town; it’s the beginning of a shelf we intend to keep filling with classics worth reading to a child.

What this is — and what it isn’t

Let’s be plain: our narration and illustrations are made with the help of AI. You deserve to know that up front — on the About page, not buried in fine print.

You’ve almost certainly seen the other kind of AI content by now — the cheap, uncanny, churned-out stuff. Flat robotic voices. Characters whose faces change from one shot to the next. Stories pumped out by the thousand with no one really behind them. People have a name for it: AI slop. We started Lamplight Library because we believed the same tools, used with care and a conscience, could make something genuinely worth your child’s bedtime. Everything below is how we try to earn that.

The voice belongs to a real person

Our narrator is not a stock text-to-speech voice. We built a custom voice model from recordings of a real narrator, used with their full knowledge and permission, so that every chapter — and every future book — is read in one warm, consistent, human voice. We chose this path specifically to avoid the tinny drift and mangled words that give off-the-shelf voices away. There is a real person’s warmth behind every reading, and they said yes.

The pictures are made with care, not carelessness

Consistency is the hardest thing in AI illustration, and it’s exactly where slop gives itself away. We trained our own models for our characters and art style, so the blue cat is recognizably the same cat on chapter one and chapter nine, in a look that holds together across a whole book. Every image is generated, then reviewed by a human, then re-made whenever something isn’t right — a face that lost its way, a scene that missed the mood. Nothing ships until we’d be glad to show it to a child ourselves.

The words are the originals

The stories themselves are not generated. They are the real, unaltered text of classic books now in the public domain — written by the authors who wrote them, read to you as they were written. We add a voice and pictures. We never rewrite the story.

Our standard

So: Lamplight Library is AI-assisted and human-directed, and we’re open about both. We’d rather make a handful of things we’re proud of than a flood of things we’re not. If we ever fall short of that, we want to hear about it.
